Musing Monday

MusingMondays5
Hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.

I've just started reading a book on my very own Kindle! It's not my first, as I read The Fifty Shades series on my mum's Kindle, but I recently bought my very own 6" Kindle Touch, and I love it. I bought it because I wanted to become more active on NetGalley, so I've downloaded a book which was published last year so I can build up my profile.

When I was young, I wanted to be a writer and would write all sorts of short stories. We are a family of hoarders, and amongst a load of old photos and things, I found a little black notepad belonging to my mum's dad (I think). In it was a list of titles of I don't know what, but I loved it, and used those titles to make up my own stories. I don't know where it is now, but I'm sure it's somewhere in the house.

Back in 2009, I was living and working in Japan, and in April I found myself in a little English pub whilst holidaying in Thailand. One of the little quirks of this pub was the English second (or more) hand books that it sold very cheap. I'm a sucker for stuff like this, and I found myself buying Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Little Women, Emma and The Secret Garden along with my pint of lager. And it is there that my reading adventure began.

I'm not sure where I got the Moleskine from, but I started to record everything that I read, the dates and score out of 5 from then on. I have all of my 50 book challenges in there, as well as my two A-Z challenges, books from the TV show Lost, the BBC's 100 book list (the books I've read highlighted in pink), Authors I Want To Read More Of, and more recently, my page tally. I also have lists at the back for Notes (things I want to read or look into), and quotes (every quote you see on my sidebar is written in the back of the Moleskine).

I love my little black book. Who knows, one day my future grandchild, or great grandchild may come across my book and love it as much as I loved my grandad's.

A few weeks ago I bought this gorgeous suitcase. I had no idea what I would use it for, but it was beautiful and I just had to have it. A few days later, I bought a load of books, and problem solved! I now have a suitcase full of TBR books! I've never had a proper TBR pile because my bookshelf is a right unorganised state, I just randomly pick books from it when I need a new book, or buy a new one or go to BookMooch. As you can see, it's full to the brim right now, I can't seem to make a dint in it, because I'll buy 10 books to my 1 read in a week!

You'll also see 5 Famous Five books in there, which I haven't decided if I want to read yet, as they are first edition anniversary books, and I've been told they might be worth about £30 each one day (I bought them for £3.75 each from Asda), so I want to keep them in good condition.

I went shopping yesterday, and came back with just under £50 worth of books (and scored a free £10 gift voucher which I'm obvo's keeping for myself :P). I bought another Roald Dahl 'Expect the Unexpected' book (this one with the story I read at school when I was 15), two more Poirot books, and books 1, 2 and 3 of 1Q84. I could have bought more but I had to stop myself. I also bought a little reading light for when I can't sleep at night.

Excitiiiiing! Now I need to actually read them...!

For my first Musing Monday I shall tell you about an old reading habit, and how I've developed it for 2013.

I have a little black book with details of all the books I've read since 2009, and at the back of this book I write in quotes I like from the books I've read (you'll see the same quotes on my sidebar on this blog). Problem is, it can be a bit of a pain marking the pages so I don't lose the quote, and then scouring that page days later to find it. A few weeks ago, I found these groovy bookmarks in Waterstones, and have decided to put them to good use and write the page number, and some key words of the quote, so I don't have to faff around anymore. I bought two packs of 25, which will also give me an added incentive to read my 50 books, as I will use a new bookmark for each book I read. Nifty eh.
