Ex-Purgatory, Peter Clines

5/5
Zombies meet superheroes in this apocalyptic romp through Los Angeles. Another great addition to the Ex- series by Peter Clines. We left the heroes at the end of Ex-Communication, after they had beaten Cairax Murrain, the demon zombie brought to life by sorcerer Max Hale. In the opening of Ex-Purgatory however, we meet university caretaker George Bailey, living out his day to day life in zombie free LA. But why is he having mysterious dreams that feel like reality, why do people on campus have the strange look of death, and who is the girl in the wheelchair who knows more about him than he does? Slowly his life is ripped open at the seams, from which the zombies crawl through and attack. The heroes are left wondering what is real, and what isn't, who is behind it all, and will they make it out alive, or will this be their last adventure in the Mount?

A must read for ANY horror/zombie/comic book fan, this series of books, in fact any book by Peter Clines, will leave you wanting more. I love these books so much, I have them on my Kindle AND in hard copy, and I've even bought the first 3 books as presents for friends.

Ex-Purgatory is released in the US - 14th January 2014, and UK 16th January 2014.

Doll Bones, Holly Black

3/5

This is a Young Adult book about three children making the transition from childhood to adolescence. Poppy, Alice and Zach love to make up stories centred around their dolls and action figures, much to the amusement of Poppy's older brothers. But when Zach's dad decides it's time for him to grow up, Zach is forced to end the game. Not a girl to welcome change easily, Poppy frees the mysterious Queen from her glass prison, and realises that her mother's old china doll is not what she seems. The children go on a quest to discover what they can about Eleanor Kerchner, a young girl who mysteriously died many years ago, and to put her to rest in her family's grave.

I enjoyed this book for what it was, a young adult mystery ghost story. It was creepy and set the scene well, and I know that if I was 20 years younger it would probably have freaked me out and I would have loved it. I would recommend it to the children in my school (and probably will do!)

Whodunnit? Murder in Mystery Manor, Anthony E. Zuiker

4/5

Ten lucky winners of an online competition are given the chance to live like a billionaire in a luxurious estate in the middle of nowhere, for a whole week. Sounds like heaven. But it's not long until they find out that it is in fact, Hell. Once they are there, they are told by the professional British butler, Giles, who is just as much a prisoner as they, that they must find evidence and solve various murders - their own. One by one, the host - who is also masquerading as one of the guests - kills the least successful guest, and their death becomes the next crime scene. Each guest must discover exactly how each murder was orchestrated by working together to solve the clues. But it is also a battle of wits and cunning, as in reality they are competing against each other, with their lives as the prize.

This was a good page turner. Not only are you wanting to find out how each murder was done, and who will discover the truth first, you are also collecting evidence to find out which one of the guests is the killer. I think I suspected every guest at one point or another! I even suspected guests after they were long dead!

However I was disappointed by the end of the book. The climax is great, and the last mystery doesn't disappoint. But the uncovering of the killer, and the last few pages, were slightly weak and felt rushed, which is why I couldn't give it 5/5. However, I still really enjoyed the book, and can't judge it all on what is essentially a couple of weak chapters.

If you fancy a book that keeps you guessing, then this book is for you. Just don't expect a Sherlock Holmes, or even a Poirot, ending.

Times of Trouble (A Time Travel Anthology), Various

3/5

This anthology of stories are all about time travel. I chose to read this book simply for the short story written by Peter Clines - Mulligan, which was good. There were quite a few other good stories in this anthology. I particularly enjoyed Let Me Take You There by Rakie Keig, Screwing Christa by Wayne Helge, Forgetting by Frank Farrar, The Transcendental Man by Timothy Martinez, Rabid Season by Mathhew Baugh, biodegradable by Gregory L. Norris, and Among Flowers and Bones by Frank Summers.

Ex-Communication, Peter Clines

5/5

These books just get better and better. By now, the Hollywood base is a thriving community. But the zombies are now stronger than ever, and it looks like it won't be long until they overpower the Mount and evil wins over good. But unbeknownst to all, there is an even bigger threat to both the heroes and the zombie ruling Legion.

I can't wait to read the next book. Keep them coming Mr. Clines!

Ex-Patriots, Peter Clines

 5/5

This is the second book in Peter Clines' Ex-series. It continues the story laid out in the first book, Ex-Heroes, developing known characters and introducing new ones. The heroes aren't long back at their Hollywood base after their adventures in the first book, before they are whisked off again to investigate a nearby US Army base, where of course chaos ensues. A new enemy is faced, secrets are uncovered, and friendships are formed, whilst in the background, the zombies become stronger than ever.

I love this series, and this book is no exception. Clines sets up future storylines as he writes his books, which makes you clambering for the previous books as you're reading. The characters are written beautifully and jump to life from the page, and the settings are woven into your imagination to create a detailed world full of zombies and superheroes. I would recommend Clines to any zombie fan.

I've been asleep, but the doctor has woken me up!

It's weird having lulls and then having certain books make you scurry for your Kindle. I've not blogged since June, but I have read a few books. I need to get back into the swing of things again.

I've read some amazing books - the first that springs to mind is the Ex- series by Peter Clines. I have recommended it to all of my zombie loving friends, alongside The Junkie Quatrain and -14-. I'm currently reading a collection of short stories just because Clines has written one of them. He's a firm favourite author now, I vow to read everything he's written.

I've also just bought Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, The Sandman Vol 1 by Neil Gaiman, and It's Not Me, It's You! by Jon Richardson (I've decided to delve into the comedian autobiography genre and I'm starting with him). So it looks like there are exciting reads ahead for me!
